Hypnotherapy is increasingly used to relieve and help cure a wide range of disorders, from physical ailments to Problems of a Psychological or emotional nature . Many sufferers, however, are deterred from seeking the help of a Hypnotherapist because of fear or ignorance about the concept of hypnosis itself, or because they have seen examples of theatrical hypnotism where those taking part have been made to look foolish, or lacking in control. I will help to put the record straight.
Many experts agree with the concepts that all hypnosis Is self hypnosis. So although a hypnotist can skilfully help to guide you into a trance,it is only with your permission that the hypnotic state will develop. Nothing will take place without your co-operation and help, when you do eventually drift into hypnosis you will stay completely in control. You will not do anything you do not want to do.Only suggestions that fall within your fundamental interests will be followed through into actual experience. When in Hypnosis, your everyday sense of right and wrong will remain with you. If I only had a penny for every client I have seen who Will say “ I heard every word “ or If you pardon me Saying so,I must point out that it never worked for me, “I never went under,Does it matter? Or I could have walked out at any time I wanted. Now matter how much You explain before hand what the state of hypnosis is like and how they will react, some clients will never really believe me. Many Clients seeking help as a treatment are often looking for a magical cure that will not involve any effort on their part. These people have believed the myths of hypnosis, including the extravagant claims made in the past regarding its effectiveness in treating any and every condition.
The reality is that people will achieve a range of different results. Some have dramatic results, obtaining the types of changes they were hoping for. They often view such results as “amazing”and “Incredible” even “Magical”! However there are some People who will only obtain minimum benefit, and others who may not notice any change at all following therapy. However my own experience is thatno therapy is wasted, it often has unexpected results long after the sessions has passed.
The Human Givens approach looks at each person holistically considering the Psychological needs and the many resources that human beings have evolved
over millions of years.
I do not have the diploma in Human Givens awarded by The European Therapy Studies Institute. However I have attended the various Lectures and workshops run by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell over the years and my approach to counselling is based on the Human Givens model.
The Human Givens approach to alleviate Anxiety for example is solution focused and encourages the person to develop a range of skills so they are able to manage their own stress. This will ensure they are getting their needs met by using their resources appropriately.
It is quite natural to experience anxiety from time to time and sportsmen as an example need to be "Hyped Up" in order to perform in a competitive situation. Also when one is attacked or in physical danger when the" Fight or Flight"response is needed. The Anxiety experienced in this case is approciate. Excessive anxiety however can lead to irrational fears and worries,Phobias, OCD,PTSD and other chronic illnesses such as Heart disease,IBS,Asthma,Skin Conditions,Gastric and Duedeneal Ulcers.
Symptoms of Anxiety include:
• Insomnia. In order to alleviate some of the Symptoms a Human Givens practitioner will recommend:
• A lifestyle Audit
• Exercise e.g. Walking
• Regular Sleep
• A regular eating Pattern
• Relaxation
• Changing the problems causing the Anxiety.
• Adapting a change attitude to the stressors causing the Anxiety.
The Human Givens Approach to alleviating Anxiety.
Is again solution focused and encourages the person a range of skills so to be effective in managing their own stress. This will ensure they are getting their needs met by using their resources appropriately.
Therapy for sufferers of Anxiety may include some of the following:
• Accurate information eg A Panic Attack is a normal reaction to extreme stress-Fight or Flight Response.
• Teach 7-11 Breathing a simple technique to diffuse arousal levels.
• Relieve Insomnia, using the above technique amongst others.
• Guided Imagery and Visualisation to rehearse change and feeling calm.
• The Rewind technique (see Phobias)
• Challenge unhelpful thought patterns.
• Teach New Skills.
A Human Givens Therapist might encourage someone suffering from anxiety become AWARE.
Accept Anxiety.
Watch it and measure it on a scale of 1-10
Act normal.
Repeat 3 steps above.
Expect the best,
Therapy for Anxiety need not be long term. A Client will generally notice important and effective Change within 1 to 2 sessions, thought dealing with multiple related concerns can take longer.
We are born with essential Physical and Emotional needs and the innate resources to help us fulfil them. These needs have evolved over millions of years and are our common biological inheritance, whatever our cultural background.

You could think of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as an owners manual for the brain. It is the science of how the brain codes our experiences and learning. This coding affects all communication and behaviour. It affects how you learn and how you perceive the world around you. It is a key to reaching goals and achieving excellence.
The Neuro"part of NLP acknowledges the fundamental idea that all behaviour stems from our neurological processes of sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste and feeling. We experience the world through our five senses, making sense of the information and then acting on it. The "Linguistic"part of the title indicates that we use language and other non-verbal communication to order our thoughts and behaviour and to communicate with others.
The "Programming" refers to ways we can choose to organise our ideas, our sequences of behaviour and actions,to produce results. So NLP explores the relationship between how we think (Neuro), how we communicate ( Linguistic) and our patterns of behaviour (Programming ).
Although well grounded in psychological theory and research,NLP is first and foremost about action rather than theory. It deals with the structure of subjective experience, how we organise what we see, hear and feel and how we edit and filter the outside world through our senses.NLP then is a model of communication that focuses on identifying and using patterns of thought that influence a persons behaviour as a means of improving the quality and effectiveness of there lives.
NLP is an effective proven vehicle for accelerated human change, radically altering the "old way" of psychotherapy.
Well it means that by knowing how your brain works you can change it so that it is always working for you and improving your life and the lives of those around you.
Well it can be used as a standard therapy or combined with Counselling and Hypnotherapy.
I personally combine all three to obtain the desired outcome.
